BioRegional started life in the UK, and our head office is here at the BedZED eco-village.
From our head office we operate our consultancy, education and policy work, and coordinate UK and international programmes of practical demonstration projects, including the One Planet programme.
We currently employ around 35 staff in the UK, with the team headed up by BioRegional's Executive Director Sue Riddlestone.

Finding us

Public transport connections to our offices are very good and are by far the better environmental option, however if you need to travel by car please call beforehand so that we can reserve you a car parking permit. If all permit spaces are in use we will direct you to a space outside of BedZED. You'll find a map to our office above, and also on OpenStreetMap.
- By rail: Direct trains to Hackbridge station from Victoria (20 mins) London St Pancras Domestic (41 mins). Turn right out of station. BedZED is 5 minutes walk down London Road (A237).
- By bus: No. 127 from Purley to Tooting (stops on either side of London road near to BedZED) via Wallington rail station and Hackbridge.
- By tram: Tramlink from Croydon or Wimbledon to Mitcham Junction station. Turn left out of station. BedZED is 15 minutes walk down London Road (A237).
- By bicycle: Follow the car route, there is good provision for cycle storage.
- By foot: If you are travelling from London go to www.walkit.com/london to get a walking route.
- By car: BedZED is on the east side of London Road (A237), opposite New Road, 1km north of Hackbridge station.
Trustees
Professor Sir Ghillean Prance - Patron
Sir Ghillean is Scientific Director of the Eden Project in Cornwall, Visiting Professor at Reading University; President of Christians in Science was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993 and awarded the Victoria Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1999. He has served as President of the Linnean Society, the Systematics Association and the Institute of Biology.
UK Board of Trustees
BioRegional’s trustees are responsible for controlling the management and administration of the charity. They serve as volunteers and receive no payment for their work.
The trustees meet at least four times a year and get involved between meetings in important decisions, legal and financial matters, business planning and visioning and give specific advice or help in their areas of expertise. All trustees undertake to actively govern the organisation, directing the organisation through collective decision making.
Graham Dean - Chair of Trustees
Graham is employed by the London Borough of Sutton as a Senior Project Manager in the Strategy Team. He particularly works to improve how service providers and community groups can work better together to raise the quality of life for all in the borough. Graham is also a qualified Town Planner and member of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
Graham has a long history of environmental activity, including working as an Environmental Projects manager and Local Agenda 21 Co-ordinator, member of Friends of the Earth, Oxfam and UK Sustainability Practitioners Network, and he has an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management.
Louise Moore - Legal
Louise specialises in environmental law and heads the Herbert Smith environment, health and safety practice. Louise advises on a wide range of environmental issues (national and international) including nuclear liability, waste, emissions trading, asbestos liability and control, contaminated land and environmental and health and safety risk management.
Her work ranges from advising on specialised regulatory EHS matters to the environmental aspects of projects and corporate transactions. Louise’s work involves environmental issues affecting rail, nuclear, chemical, pharmaceutical, waste, automotive, and oil and gas sector clients among others.
Sarah Purdy - Treasurer
Sarah is a chartered accountant and a Director of BioRegional Charcoal Company.
David Thornton - Personnel
David has worked in Local Government for 35 years, spending the last 10 as Director of Environmental Services with the London Borough of Sutton. During this time he encouraged Councillors to make Sutton the first Authority to adopt environmental management systems (EMAS) across all departments of the Council.
David started his career in housing management and been Director of Housing at Sutton, where he was particularly keen that the Council supported BedZED, bringing together his interest in both affordable and sustainable housing.
In 2001 David set up "The Quality Partnership" and since then has been involved in assessing organisations for the Government’s Charter Mark standard, promoting EMAS, ISO 9000 and general recognised "Best Practice".
Roger Fawdry
Roger is a Director and Partner of Business Eco Group, formed through an initiative of the DoE/DTI and several large businesses in 1994. Based in Sutton, its activities include helping organisations through: Environmental Management Standards ISO 14001, EMAS, Integrated Management Systems, Climate Change Levy reductions, Greening the Supply Chain through BS 8555, and a range of waste minimisation and reduction programmes.
Roger’s background before becoming a partner at Business Eco was in the commercial and environmental sectors of the oil and petrochemical industries in Europe. Roger was an early member of the chemical industry’s “Responsible Care” programme and of the environment committees of the American Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Directors.
Joanna Hills
Jo previously worked at BioRegional in the position of Director of Planning and Performance and company secretary. When Jo moved on to work as a Project Manager in Sustainable Energy at Reigate and Banstead Borough Council she kindly offered to join the trustee board.
Andrew Hope
Andrew is Director of ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) in the UK. The ICC is the voice of business internationally and promotes responsible practice by the business community worldwide. He is particularly active on issues such as Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development.
Before joining the ICC in November 2003, Andrew had worked for 25 years in the Manufacturing and Mining Sectors in England, Wales and Namibia. As a consultant between 2001 and 2003 he worked with BioRegional on the commercialisation of projects and on BioRegional's internal systems and processes.
Ruth Jarratt
Ruth is the Development Director for the Royal Opera House and was previously Fundraising and Marketing Director for Age Concern England. Ruth has also worked with and for smaller charities and has been a trustee of Reach Volunteering, which is largely staffed by volunteers.
Dr Robin Stott
Robin is a former consultant physician and medical teacher. He began work on sustainability issues as Medical Director of Lewisham Hospital and led the first ever social, environmental and economic audit of a hospital. He was a founding member of the London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) where he remains a core commissioner and has been the sustainability advisor to the Mayor of Lewisham for the past five years.
He is also a trustee of Medact, a global health charity led by its health professional membership, it undertakes education, research and advocacy on the health implications of conflict, development and environmental change.
Paul Wickham
Paul had a long career with NatWest Bank until moving on to become the Chief Executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust. Paul joined SWT with a brief to help the Trust become a more effective force for nature conservation in Surrey. He negotiated the contract for SWT to take over the management of Surrey County Council’s Countryside Estate, and increased membership from less than 5,000 to more than 20,000 members, and turnover from £350K to £3.5m.
Paul’s role as a trustee of BioRegional includes being an advisor to BioRegional Charcoal Company.
Paul is also trustee of The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts.
Dr Julia Wright
Julia works as the International Programme Manager and Senior Scientific Officer at the Henry Doubleday Research Institute. Julia specifically works to develop the contribution of agro-ecology and organic agriculture to contemporary development concerns of food security and environmental resilience. She manages the Programme’s international
advisory and research services, budget allocations, fundraising and human resources.
She is also a team leader and co-ordinator for several international R&D projects.
Julia has previously been awarded an EU Marie Curie Fellowship while a research fellow at Wageningen University. Julia also has a PhD in Sustainable Agriculture.
