Feedback from previous CPD clients
We collect feedback from all
our CPD attendees to ensure that we continue to meet the needs
of our clients. We ask each attendee to rate the quality of the
training from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). Over the last two years
93% of the attendees gave the training a rating of 4 or 5.
“As pioneers in the field
of providing Zero Carbon Homes, I loved the platform for honest
opinions and frank discussions on issues ranging from bio mass
and CHP to implementation in new and existing buildings.”
Manmohan Dayal, Planning Officer, London Borough of Merton
“I have been familiar
with the principles of sustainability for some years. BioRegional's
One Planet Living course showed me how these principals
may be practically incorporated into engineering designs to give
benefit to the client, the community and the environment. I am
convinced that BioRegional and their BedZED concept is a glimpse
of the future development of our cities.”
Rob Moorhead, Senior Consultant, KBR, Halliburton
“It was a very useful
day for me as it gave me another dimension to add to the new strand
of energy assessor training. I look forward to attending more
CPD courses at BioRegional and will definately be recommending
this day to my colleagues.” Magda Devaris, Head of Projects,

This one-day event will help you understand how to choose
sustainable construction materials, based upon BioRegional's experience with material reclamation, developing sustainable communities and running the sustainable materials buying club One Planet Products.
It will cover the advantages,
in terms of overall construction process and costs, and carbon
savings, of sustainable construction materials. The format of
the day will start with seminars and then break up into discussion
groups before coming back together as a group at the end of both
the morning and afternoon sessions.

BedZED and Beyond CPD
This one-day course examines BedZED
as one example of a sustainable community, and also uses ecological
foot-printing and the 10 One Planet Living Principles as a framework
for discussing and designing future sustainable communities. The
course comprises three seminars in the morning and a workshop in
the afternoon. The morning sessions cover sustainability in broad
terms, followed by an in-depth look at the successes and lessons
learnt from BedZED through a presentation and tour, then a seminar
on the impacts of construction materials and how to specify and
source low impact alternatives. In the afternoon session the participants
use the knowledge gained in the morning and previous experience,
to design a sustainable development using the 10 One Planet Living
principles.
Course dates
No dates have been set for this course yet, and the full programme
has not yet been finalised. Please call Matt Sullivan on 020 8404

The Code for Sustainable Homes looks set to push
high standards in relation to water, so making use of green, grey and black water, and
reducing demand in buildings, are a key issue for the construction industry. This one-day
course will look at a range of technologies, including those used at BedZED, led by
an experienced industry professional.

What is Sustainability?
(45 minutes)
Pooran Desai, BioRegional Development Group, BioRegional Quintain
Ltd, OBE, RIBA Honorary Fellow or Sue Riddlestone, Director,
BioRegional Development Group
The aim of the talk is to demystify the buzzwords and generate
understanding in the concept of sustainability. Definitions
of sustainability, setting sustainability targets, tools to
quantify what is or is not sustainable and eco-footprinting
are all covered.
Introduction to One
Planet Living (45 minutes)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
Globally we are consuming resources at a faster rate than the
planet can replenish them, causing problems such as climate
change, disappearing forests and declining fisheries. For example,
if everyone in the world lived as most Europeans do, we would
need three planets to support us. The challenge facing humanity,
therefore, is this: “How can people everywhere enjoy a
high quality of life while living within the carrying capacity
of one planet?” The answer is One Planet Living, guiding
principles that can be applied to individual lifestyles, businesses,
communities, even whole cities. This seminar introduces One
Planet Living and some of the ways in which the principles have
been applied.
BedZED Tour (1 hour)
Matt Sullivan or Tom Chance, BioRegional Development Group
The tour covers the history and aims of the development and
the monitored results so far. We also look at the energy and
water systems in place and the green lifestyles work that has
been done on transport, food and waste.
Zero Carbon Homes
(1.5 hours)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
This seminar looks at how we might achieve zero carbon homes,
both by upgrading existing housing stock and also for new homes.
The seminar covers household energy consumption, energy efficiency
and energy generation for single dwellings, using case studies
to provide examples.
BedZED Architects:
Presentation and question and answer session with lead architect
from ZEDfactory (1 hour)
An opportunity to talk to and question one of the lead architects
behind BedZED. The talk will detail the philosophy behind the
ZED approach and discuss the developments undertaken since BedZED
was completed.
Question and answer
session with a BedZED resident (30 minutes or 1 hour)
Hear about the role the Residents’ Association play at
BedZED in terms of furthering the green-lifestyles programme
and building the community. You can also ask questions about
what it’s like to live at BedZED
Green Water Treatment
Plant (1 hour)
David Triggs, Consultant
David Triggs designed the Green Water Treatment Plant at BedZED
for Albion Water. He will explain how the system works and detail
successes as well as lessons learnt for future developments.
If you would like to go inside the plant please ask in advance
for us to arrange this.
Reclaimed, recycled
and low impact materials for construction (1 hour)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
A chance to learn more about the materials sourcing policy at
BedZED and ask questions about how best to source and use reclaimed,
recycled and low impact materials in future developments. The
talk will also cover minimising construction waste and designing
for deconstruction.
Biomass and Urban
Forestry (1 hour)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
An opportunity to learn more about using woodchip as a renewable
fuel, a review of the CHP and woodchip supply chain at BedZED,
and the potential for using urban tree surgery waste as a biomass
fuel for future developments.
Operational Waste
Strategies (1 hour)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
The seminar will provide an overview of the waste issues that
will have an impact on a community. It will include strategies
to help achieve high levels of recycling and composting through
the design of the collection system, infrastructure and communications
activities.
Sustainable Food Strategies

BioRegional Consulting Ltd
Growing, packaging and transporting food accounts for approximately
25% of our eco-footprint in the UK. This seminar looks at how
we in the UK could reduce this impact at an individual and community
level.
Green Transport Planning
(1 hour)
BioRegional Consulting Ltd
This seminar looks at how to reduce fossil fuel transport demand
by implementing a green transport plan, thereby reducing the
need for car parking and enabling better access to public transport,
car sharing and walking and cycling routes.
One Planet Living
Workshop (2 hours)
Each group is asked to come up with a sustainability action
plan for a development using the 10 One Planet Living principles.
The group projects include vary from retrofitting of Victorian
houses to a new, mixed-use waterside development. Each group
is supplied with the relevant plans, maps and details of local
infrastructure and resources for their project.
