Case study: Gateshead Masterplan

Client: Gateshead Council

By placing sustainability at the heart of a masterplan, it is possible to create innovative and resourceful communities. In this work, BioRegional worked with master planners IDP and Gateshead Council to develop a masterplan document incorporating the 10 One Planet Living principles for Gateshead. The masterplan is for the development of a brownfield site, to create a mixed used development consisting of 400 homes near Gateshead town centre.

This masterplan document will inform the design competition and recruitment of the design and construction consortium which will take a one planet living approach to the development. This process ensures that the development considers sustainable lifestyles, as well as the importance of sustainable construction.

The winning consortium will be appointed in 2010 and BioRegional will guide the development of the site. With the success of this masterplanning process, Gateshead Council is looking to use this as the template in the development of future sites around the town.

Date of completion: April 2009

Partner: IDP
