Case study: Haringey wood fuel assessment

Client: Haringey Council

Haringey Council identified the potential value in using local arboricultural and forestry wood residues to produce wood chip for use in local biomass boiler installations. BioRegional calculated the potential clean wood residue resource available from various sectors in and around Haringey, where approximately 7,000 tonnes per annum were identified. When processed at a TreeStation approximately 5,250 tonnes per annum of wood chip would be produced, the reduction in quantity is due to removal of fines.

The study then looked at how wood residues identified could be processed into wood chip and supplied to local biomass heat facilities. For biomass heat the 5,250 tonnes per annum identified would be enough to provide the annual fuel demands of approximately 6MWth of installed capacity, assuming a common capacity factor of 20% and plant efficiency of 85%. Indicative capital costs were examined with various partnership scenarios presented to Haringey Council.
