Case study: Footprinting and sustainability strategies for Nokia

Client: Nokia

Nokia are one of the world leaders in the manufacture of mobile phones, having sold over one billion mobile phones since the 1980s. The first stage of this work involved an ecological and carbon footprint analysis of Nokia’s largest factory, Komárom in Hungary. A similar assessment was also conducted for their Research and Development facility in Copenhagen, and Singapore Head Office. This work found some interesting outcomes, such as 70% of the ecological footprint for the Copenhagen site occurred from food and electricity consumption.

After calculating the impact of the sites, BioRegional used the results to develop strategies for reducing the impact of building emissions, waste, transport, materials, water and food. This included mitigation strategies over the short, medium and long term, a strategy to engage staff and manage the programme, influence suppliers, and monitor and report on progress in the future.

Partners: Global Footprint Network
