Experience at BedZED
Overview
The One Planet Experience is a new interactive exhibition at the BedZED eco-village visitor centre in South London. Funded by Defra and created by BioRegional, this Inspire mark awarded project explains how London 2012 will be the greenest Olympic and Paralympic games ever, and uses the London 2012 sustainability story to inspire visitors to save energy and reduce waste.
Visitors can find out why the London 2012 velodrome is the most energy efficient building on the Olympic Park, and then take a ride on the energy bike to see how many household appliances they can power.
After learning how London 2012 has reused over 98 per cent of the materials from the buildings that were demolished on site, visitors can engage with interactive exhibits to find out how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste in their own homes.
The One Planet Experience was opened in October 2011 by David Weir MBE (pictured above), multiple gold medal-winning Paralympic athlete, and has received support from London 2012 medal hopefuls including cyclist Joanna Rowsell and triathlete Jess Harrison.
The aim is for more than 2,000 visitors to come to the One Planet Experience in the first year, with half of them pledging to save energy and reduce waste.
Alongside the exhibition the project is hosting a series of free workshops for local residents, offering practical help with draughtproofing, energy saving, and installing renewable energy technologies.
During the Games the One Planet Experience project is engaging with Olympic and Paralympic Athletes through the One Planet Centre in the Olympic Village. We are working with the athletes to help them become sustainability champions when the Games are over, providing a lasting legacy of behaviour change.
