Background

BioRegional is an independent, entrepreneurial charity which aims to implement real-life, viable solutions for sustainable living, to bring local sustainability into the mainstream of our economic and social life.

We develop methods and technologies by which society can meet more of its needs from sustainable local resources, such as farming, forestry, renewable energy, and recycled waste, and reduce the ecological footprint of our activities to a globally equitable level. This allows us to strengthen regional economies and communities, reduce our contribution to global warming, reduce waste and maintain or increase quality of life while leaving space for wildlife.

BioRegional is a friendly and dynamic team of 40 staff, based at the Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) eco-development in Hackbridge, south London.

Job Profile


Main purpose of the job

To manage and develop the fundraising activities of BioRegional Development Group ensuring that funding is available for BioRegional’s projects to be delivered and to allow the organisation to continue to grow and meet its objectives.

Position in organisation

The role of Head of Fundraising reports directly to the Internal Board and is line managed by the Director of Finance.

The role line manages our Resources Officer and also supervises the fundraising that all project managers are expected to carry out as part of their roles.

Scope of job

Ensuring that funding is secured for BioRegional’s projects is vital. We are therefore seeking a candidate who has strong experience of successful fundraising from a wide variety of sources. You will work closely with the other senior staff on future strategy, direction and new project areas.

You will initiate and develop relationships with funders to encourage repeat giving, diversify the types of income received and ensure that funding claims are successful and on-time. You will prepare specific and generic proposals to a high standard.

In this post you will develop fundraising approaches for BioRegional’s diverse sustainability projects. You will work directly with Project Managers on developing funding applications for their work. The Head of Fundraising will co-ordinate the team and all fundraising and ensure the whole process of raising funds is completed to the highest standard.

We need a candidate who is confident, able to use their initiative, highly self-motivated, and an efficient worker able to meet deadlines. You will also need to have excellent written communication and presentational skills, as well as excellent communication skills on the telephone and in meetings. You need to be numerate and confident in understanding, creating and revising project budgets.

You will need a helpful, team-working ability to enable you to work constructively alongside the team. This post gives an excellent opportunity to contribute to and help develop a wide range of BioRegional’s activities, and play a vital role in making this work possible.

Dimensions and limits of authority

• High level of authority within the organisation.
• Provide leadership and strategy for the fundraising team.
• Directly manage the fundraising team.
• Responsible for setting fundraising objectives, strategy and for the achievement of
results.
• Responsible for signing off on all funding applications and agreements.
• Responsible for managing our relationships with funders.

Qualifications & skills level

Experience
• Varied experience of fundraising from Charitable Trusts and Foundations, UK government departments, major donors, business and ideally the European Union.
• Experience of creating and developing fundraising strategies.
• Proven experience of raising six figure sums.
• Experienced in identifying and developing new income opportunities.
• Previous experience of the environmental sector would be ideal but not essential.

Qualifications
• Ideally a degree level qualification or equivalent.
• Ideally a member of the Institute of Fundraising.

• Business-like, common sense, pragmatic approach.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Highly self-motivated and confident, able to be decisive and use own initiative.

• Confident in use of Microsoft Office, Outlook and Internet Explorer.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

    %
1 Fundraising – primary responsibility for fundraising in the organisation
as well as co-ordinating and supervising the work of others.

• Research possibilities for funding against funding needs with the aim of diversifying funding, increasing unrestricted funding and ultimately ensuring the continued growth of the charity.
• Create new opportunities, initiate contact and maintain liaison with potential funders, including attending high level meetings and events and hosting them at our offices.
• Lead on the writing of fundraising applications
• Work closely with project managers to ensure project objectives are accurately represented in fundraising applications.
• Produce first rate fundraising applications to charitable trusts, UK government, business and the European Union..
• Meet core funding target of £1,000,000 per year through own fundraising efforts.

2 Relationship Management

• Manage the relationship with existing funders to ensure a high level of satisfaction.
• Keep a schedule of reporting deadlines and ensure they are met.
• Keep funders up to date with developments and news at BioRegional.
• Ensure that all reporting to funders is done to a high standard.
• Input into the year end process reporting terms and conditions of funds to the auditors.

3 Strategy and organisational management – as a senior member of the team you will input into the organisational direction through being a member of our strategic management team.

• Establish fundraising goals and strategy for the range of funding sources
• Develop the fundraising strategy to tap new areas for BioRegional.
• Input into the Business Planning process.
• Devise and deliver training to colleagues and project managers to develop the organisations fundraising skills.
• Contribute to the project planning process. Active involvement in the creation of new areas of work.
• Draw up budgets and income strategies for new projects in conjunction with the Director of Finance.
• Work with the communications manager to map organisational stakeholders with a view to a long term major gifts strategy.

4 Line Management

• Line-manage the Resources Officer
• Plan and manage the growth of the fundraising team.
• Any other reasonable tasks as necessary.

Other Details

Place of work: BedZED Centre, 24 Helios Road, Wallington, Surrey. SM6 7BZ
Contract period: Permanent contract, subject to a probationary period of six months.
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week; 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Evening and weekend work will occasionally be required. Out of hours working will be compensated with time off in lieu.
Holiday entitlement: 25 days per annum, increasing by 1 day with every full year worked, to a maximum of 30 days; plus public holidays.
Pension After three months service a 6% employer pension contribution into the BioRegional ethical pension.
Childcare voucher salary sacrifice scheme available to qualifying staff.
