BedZED chooses sustainable timber reception
- naturally

Visitors to the BedZED Visitor Centre – Beddington Zero Energy Development, the UK’s flagship environmental housing and workspace project will be greeted with a new bespoke reception unit designed and manufactured by Blue Line, Europe’s first Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified office furniture manufacturer. FSC certification denotes the highest standard of sustainable forestry management in the world.

The unit produced at Blue Line’s factory in Barking, Essex, features an elegant curving design measuring approximately 4,000 mm long x 1100 mm high with ’drop’ counter section, with inset base, for wheelchair users. Constructed from (FSC) certified timber and finished in crown cut oak veneer with solid timber lippings (no pvc edging) the receptions illustrates how natural materials can be both ‘green’ and functional. Like all Blue Line furniture, the reception is finished with severe rated lacquers, which will for example, withstand direct contact with hot coffee cups, etc.

Welcoming the new reception, Lilja Katanka of BioRegional, which has its offices within the Visitor Centre and acted as sustainability consultants for BedZED, said “The Blue Line reception adds that perfect finishing touch to our Visitor Centre, which handles some 4,500 people each year. The reaction from visitors and staff has been very positive and we feel that it underlines our belief that eco-friendly products can be affordable and attractive.”

Sustainable Alternatives in the Office:
Blue Line manufactures a comprehensive range of FSC certified standard office, executive and boardroom furniture, media walls, receptions, etc from FSC certified timbers and can also produce matching veneered architectural wall panels and specialist furniture for dealing rooms and control centres. The 56-year old company is a pioneering ‘green’ manufacturer, operating initiatives such as recycling its off cuts, converting its sawdust into compost and buying-back its old products for refurbishment and resale.

In recognition of its achievements, Blue Line products are endorsed by the WWF – the global environmental network, as the “ethically and environmentally responsible choice in office furniture” and Blue Line is licensed to use the world famous Panda logo.
