| A new report offering
an introduction for social housing providers on developing sustainable
housing is now available. The ‘BedZED Case Study Report’
is based on the experience of creating the UK’s largest eco
village - the Beddington Zero Energy Development. The report was
commissioned by the Housing Corporation and written by environmental
organisation BioRegional Development, a partner in the BedZED scheme.
Housing association employees are invited to contact BioRegional
for their free copy of the report.
BedZED is one of the most coherent
examples of sustainable living in the UK and is receiving widespread
recognition for its innovative approach to delivering sustainable
urban development. BedZED is a Peabody Trust development working
in partnership with BioRegional Development Group and designed by
Bill Dunster Architects.
The leaflet is targeted at housing
association staff involved in development, investment and refurbishment
in relation to social housing provision. Environmentally sustainable
design and investment in energy efficiency can reduce running costs
for tenants with any extra initial capital costs being recouped
through lifecycle savings.
Nick James BedZED project manager
at BioRegional commented:
“Sustainable development is particularly important with regards
to housing, as the sector contributes approximately 27% of all CO2
emissions in the UK. Investment in energy efficient homes can help
to reduce fuel poverty by cutting running costs for tenants. This
case study shows how green living is a real, attractive and affordable
option. I hope that housing associations across the country contact
us for a free copy of the report, it’s a good introduction
to what can be done to improve sustainability in public sector housing”.
The BedZED case study report was
commissioned by the Housing Corporation as part of its commitment
to integrating Government policy on sustainable development into
its ethos. The Corporation aims to provide a better quality of life
for residents by encouraging housing associations to adopt sustainable
development principles. The Housing Corporation invests in and regulates
a sector that owns and manages more than 1.45 million homes (approximately
7% of total English housing stock), housing at least twice that
number of people.
If you are a housing association
employee and would like a free copy of the report please telephone
