| BioRegional Charcoal
Company and Butterfly Conservation are working together to boost
butterfly numbers by selling locally produced BBQ charcoal. BioRegional
woodland workers manage woodlands to create habitat for threatened
butterfly and bird species. Local charcoal also helps stop illegal
logging in tropical forests and the destruction of mangrove swamps,
provides jobs in British forestry and helps to reduce global warming.
Alan Titchmarsh, Vice President of Butterfly Conservation, is one
of our best customers. He commented,
“I am thrilled to support
BioRegional Charcoal Company and Butterfly Conservation in their
work to help boost the numbers of butterflies and other threatened
animal species in the UK, by restoring woodlands to management.
Butterflies are a valuable and fragile part of the British countryside,
and I would hope they’ll still be here for hundreds of years
to come. I will certainly be buying local charcoal for my BBQ this
summer, and I urge others to do the same.”
BioRegional are happy to be celebrating
their 12th year of operation this year and are very pleased that
B&Q will be stocking their charcoal. BioRegional’s charcoal
is available now in selected B&Q stores nationwide as “B&Q
Locally Produced Lumpwood Charcoal”, priced £4.48 for
a 3kg bag.
BioRegional Charcoal Company’s
Director, Pooran Desai, said, “The high quality of our charcoal
makes it the first choice for seasoned barbecue users. Many charcoal
products continue to be sourced from unsustainably managed tropical
forests, such as in West Africa or now, increasingly, from countries
such as China.” BioRegional’s charcoal carries the FSC
logo which identifies products containing wood from well managed
forests, certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship
Council.
BioRegional charcoal is made from
wood harvested by re-introducing traditional woodland management,
known as coppicing. As a result of coppice management, woodland
flowers flourish and act as food plants for threatened species such
as the pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly, at the same time as
creating new habitat for woodland birds like the nightingale.
BioRegional manages a 30-strong
network of rural woodland workers across the UK. The company co-ordinates
local deliveries to stores across the country, thereby cutting the
charcoal-miles associated with your barbecue and reducing transport-related
CO2 emissions (the main cause of climate change) by 85%. This unique
arrangement means that a national store can have a local product
on its shelves without having to deal with 30 different suppliers.
BioRegional charcoal is a better
buy even without the green credentials. Being made from British
hard woods, with an alternately dense and open ring structure, the
charcoal lights more easily without firelighters (avoiding food
tainting) and burns hotter, avoiding the usual scene of waiting
two hours before the BBQ is ready. So support British woodlands
– make sure you have a BBQ with the locals this Easter!
