The Eco-Choice for your Open Fire

BioRegional Local Firewood is back by popular demand and is available in B&Q over the winter months. This means you can enjoy your festive open fire in the knowledge that the wood came from certified sustainable forestry, helped British wildlife, and supported the rural economy in the form of your local woodland worker. No other fuel does so much good!

There are five reasons why BioRegional Local Firewood is the eco-choice:

1. Supporting your local rural woodland worker: British woodlands fell into decline in the last century as it became more difficult to make a living from traditional woodland management and crafts. Through BioRegional’s scheme, local producers can reach the markets of national retailers, bringing a much needed income to a rural industry. And the local supply through a network of producers means the firewood is from your local woodsman or woman.

2. Directly supports British woodland wildlife: BioRegional’s producers are all working to increase numbers of endangered woodland wildlife. For example, woodland management in Surrey has created the habitat necessary for the survival of the UK’s fastest declining butterfly species, the pearl bordered fritillary.

3. Guaranteed Forest Stewardship Council certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the highest international environmental standard for forestry. All the wood products produced by BioRegional’s network are independently certified by the FSC.

4. Avoid illegal log cuts: It can be hard to tell whether firewood has been responsibly or legally cut. BioRegional’s producers are part of a sustainable scheme which has been running for five years, bringing a sustainable income to a sustainable firewood harvest.

5. High quality seasoned hardwoods: Much of the firewood on the market is softwood, and therefore inferior in quality. Seasoned hardwood doesn’t smoke as much, produces more heat and is easier to light.

Alan Knight, Head of Sustainability at B&Q, who stock BioRegional Local Firewood, said:
“B&Q is happy to support this initiative for another year, we are happy to
do this because for us local sourced firewood makes commercial sense - and
that is the key for local sourcing”

BioRegional firewood is part of the BioRegional Charcoal Company and is a member of the Climate Care scheme. BioRegional pays a small premium on the fuel that is uses for transportation to repair the damage that is done from using fossil fuel energy. The scheme invests this premium into developing energy efficient technologies, renewable energy and forest restoration projects. The projects save at least as much CO2 as was initially emitted
