Our Challenge

We live in a consumer society where over-consumption is driving environmental degradation.
If everyone in the world lived as we do in the UK we would need three planets to support us.

The BioRegional challenge is to find ways of living and working where we can reduce our consumption by two thirds to the one planet level.

BioRegional Solutions

BioRegional is a visionary environmental organisation, dedicated to developing practical solutions for sustainable living.

Get fired up about British Woodlands this winter!

When the weather turns wintry, a real log fire is guaranteed to bring a warm glow into your home. BioRegional’s HomeGrown Firewood and Kindling offers carbon-neutral, high quality wood that won’t spit or smoke. Fire lovers can be happy in the knowledge that these products come from sustainably managed forests, help boost British wildlife and support the rural economy. No other fuel does so much good!

Sarah Mooney, BioRegional’s Firewood Manager said:
The market is flooded with poor quality, unseasoned firewood harvested from softwood trees such as pine which burn too quickly, spit, smoke and clog up chimney flues. Our producers use the best firewood species, such as oak and ash, which are easy to light and burn steadily. We naturally dry our hardwood logs to give our customers the best possible ‘seasoned’ products for their fire."

BioRegional HomeGrown wood products are great for wildlife fans as they come from traditional UK woodlands whose environmentally friendly management by selective thinning and coppicing ensures that woodland flowers, birds and butterflies such as the threatened pearl bordered fritillary (shown above) can thrive. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) monitors our management ensuring that we reach the highest international environmental standard for responsible, legal and sustainable forestry. BioRegional HomeGrown Firewood and Kindling is stocked in all mainland UK and Northern Ireland B&Q stores priced £3.98 and £1.98 respectively. more info

BioRegional Consulting

Recently completed WRAP projects
BioRegional Consulting Ltd have now completed the WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme) studies mentioned in our August newsletter.

The Reclaimed Products Guide shows how to reuse building materials, and quantifies the potential cost and embodied energy savings of using these reclaimed products as opposed to new materials. It also lists suppliers and offers practical advice on how to specify reclaimed materials. The guide will be publicly available from the WRAP website shortly www.wrap.org.uk.

The Recyclability Metric looks at the best ways to measure and set targets for the future recyclability of both products and projects in order to reduce waste. To do this the indicator needs to be able to quantify the benefits of reusing, recycling or downcycling (i.e. turning into a lower value product) materials. The study also considered integrating the indicator into existing standards and guidance and makes recommendations to create a toolkit for maximising the future recyclability of projects.

BioRegional Consulting win Sustainable Consultant of the Year at Building Magazine awards

In November, BioRegional Consulting won the Sustainable Consultant of the Year award at Building Magazine’s Sustainability Awards for their diverse and committed contribution towards sustainability in the built environment.

Ben Gill, Director of BioRegional Consulting commented:
"We are thrilled to win this award. Our team have been going since 2004 so we are a relatively new team but because of our experience with projects like BedZED and One Planet Living we have been able to offer our clients truly sustainable services based on the lessons learned from our own real-life projects.

We actually have our offices at BedZED and we certainly practise what we preach – we couldn’t very well recommend our clients to go the extra mile otherwise! We look forward to working with many more clients to help embed One Planet Living within the built environment”

BioRegional win prize at the Green Guardian Awards

We were very pleased to have won a special award from the Sutton Green Guardian Awards on October 29th 2007. The award was given in recognition for the environmental projects that we have led in the borough over the past 13 years.

Our Director, Sue Riddlestone, commented:
" It's fantastic to win this special award for our work in Sutton but we wouldn't have got nearly as far without the support of so many enthusiastic local partners to deliver projects such as the BedZED eco-village in Hackbridge and the heritage lavender fields in Carshalton. We are now looking forward to working on the new One Planet Living in Sutton project that will start with a zero carbon energy plan for the Borough - to save money for residents and help reduce carbon emissions - the main cause of climate change. I hope everyone will get involved. Visit our website www.oplsutton.org."

One Planet Living in Sutton project will bring energy savings to borough residents
BioRegional has secured Government funding to begin an ambitious project to work towards One Planet Living® in Sutton.

Defra’s Community Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) has awarded the project £90,621 for BioRegional to work with local partners such as Sutton Council to develop and deliver an energy efficiency plan to help residents keep their homes warm, save money and reduce carbon dioxide emissions – the main cause of climate change. This work is part of a larger plan which will look at other areas of sustainable living such as transport, food and waste, to work towards making Sutton a sustainable One Planet Living borough.

We need to work towards One Planet Living because we are currently using more resources than the planet can renew each year and creating more pollution than the planet can deal with. If everyone in the world lived like the average Sutton resident we would need 3 planets to support us. The work that BioRegional have done at the Peabody Trust’s BedZED eco-village in Hackbridge has shown that we can reduce our consumption by two thirds to achieve “One Planet Living” and improve our quality of life in the process.

BioRegional’s Director Sue Riddlestone commented: “Sutton has always led the way on green issues and as a local organisation we at BioRegional are delighted that Sutton is the first borough to adopt One Planet Living. This is a really groundbreaking project where, as with BedZED, the whole world will be interested in finding out more.

Most people, when you ask them, will say they don’t want to reduce their resource use by two thirds as it sounds like having to lose something. But the great thing that we have found is that it’s more about being efficient and developing new ways of doing things and that people are actually happier. So for us, a sustainable future is nothing to be afraid of, but something we can all get involved in and look forward to
”.

Calling Sutton Borough residents! You are invited to take part in a series of open workshops in early 2008, one for each of the 10 principles, to make a sustainability action plan for the whole borough. If you would like to get involved, by taking part in a workshop, or by taking steps to make your lifestyle more sustainable, then register your details on our holding page
www.oplsutton.org and we will be in touch soon. The full website will be launched March 2008.
