David Cameron, Theresa May and Chris Huhne visit BedZEDBioRegional is confident that new Prime Minister David Cameron and at least two members of his cabinet will need little convincing that low carbon communities are an attractive and achievable proposition.

Remarkably, David Cameron, Chris Huhne (Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change) and Theresa May (Secretary of State for the Home Department and Minister for Women and Equalities) have all been visitors to the UK’s best known eco-village, BedZED in South London, where they have seen first-hand that low energy homes and sustainable lifestyles are a realistic target for the new government.

BedZED is a Peabody housing association development in partnership with sustainability experts BioRegional and ZEDfactory architects. The development comprises 100 homes and office space and has been praised for its holistic approach to sustainability which includes planning for energy and water efficiency, travel, waste, food and community cohesion.

BioRegional’s Executive Director, Sue Riddlestone, said today:

“We are delighted to have welcomed the Prime Minister and two of his cabinet members to BedZED in recent years, where we have been able to show them that living within the resources of our one planet is a realistic ambition, can be done cost effectively and gives residents a better quality of life. With the encouraging news of the cancellation of the third runway at Heathrow, we urge our new coalition Government to seize the opportunity to lead the country towards a more sustainable future".
