Summary

BioRegional, Croydon Council and City Suburban Tree Surgeons have established a TreeStation to produce 10,000 tonnes a year of high quality woodchip fuel from tree surgery arisings. The woodchip is suitable for use in all woodchip boilers. The TreeStation is the first of its type in London and was set up to achieve the following:

  • provide a sustainable means of disposal for tree waste;
  • support Croydon Council’s renewable energy policy;
  • stimulate the development of a local biomass heating market;
  • provide a new business opportunity locally; and
  • act as a demonstration site.

This case study gives details of its development and operation, including an assessment of its viability in the longer term.

The work of BioRegional and its partners at the Croydon TreeStation was recognised in June 2006 when the project was a winner at the 2006 Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy.
