The average Chinese person's footprint
in 2006 was 1.6 global hectares, less than the fair
share allowed to achieve One Planet Living.
But with the Chinese economy growing by over 10% each
year, a massive community building programme coupled
with an increase in the average quality of life could
easily push the average Chinese person past One
Planet Living.
A
One Planet Living community for Panyu, China
BioRegional are working
with China Merchants Property Development (CMPD) in
Guangzhou to progress work on their Panyu project masterplanning.
CMPD are one of the largest property developers in China
with a strong track record in sustainable development,
having completed China’s first LEED Silver development
in 2005.
BioRegional has produced
an outline SAP for CMPD's Panyu Jinshan Project
- a 5,000 home development that will include a business
park, retail and community facilities. Xiaohong Chen
(BioRegional One Planet Living China Country
Manager) is working from CMPD’s offices in Guangzhou
and will regularly visit the site.

Panyu Jinshan is currently
being considered as a One Planet Living flagship
community, and in June 2007 BioRegional signed a letter
of intent for strategic collaboration with CMPD at our
offices in BedZED. The construction will start in early
2007 and will be complete in time for the Asia Games
which will be in Guangzhou in 2011.

Sue Riddlestone (BioRegional
Director and Co-founder), Sumeet Manchanda (One
Planet Living Communities International Programme
Manager) and Xiaohong returned to China in January/February
07 and visited a new site in Shanghai called Tang Town.
This is another opportunity for One Planet Living
in China and the developers are currently conducting
an internal exercise to understand how they would like
to proceed.
