Heads of State will be at Rio+20
26.01.12
Yesterday at the UN Headquaters in New York we heard that 30 Heads of States have confirmed they will be attending Rio+20 in June, and UN coordinators expect that over the next four months this number will reach closer to 100. It appears that Rio+20 is now on track to be a Summit, the high level political meeting we had all hoped it would be! There is no information available on which countries these 30 Heads of States are to represent, though apparently they do include India, China and Germany.
It is our hope that as more countries openly comfirm their high-level participation at Rio+20, there will be growing pressure on others to attend, including our own Prime Minister David Cameron who currently has no plans to be in Rio de Jainero in June this year.
Reported by Freya Seath, BioRegional's International Policy Advisor who is currently at the UN in New York participating in informal zero draft discussions.
