One Planet Living Case Studies
BioRegional's global One Planet Living initiative consists of a range of practical projects and partnerships that demonstrate how we can live within our fair share of the earth’s resources. Click on the tabs above to find out more about the main themes of the initiative:
- Businesses and organisations
- Lifestyles, sport and events
The One Planet initiative uses 10 One Planet principles as a framework to help us live and work within our fair share of the earth’s resources.

BioRegional's One Planet Communities programme is a network of earth’s greenest neighbourhoods, where people can live a healthier, high-quality lifestyle within a fair share of our planet's resources.
Working with developers around the world, the programme currently has nine endorsed projects in the UK, USA, Portugal, France, Luxembourg, Australia and Tanzania in Africa.
Officially endorsed projects display the planet with a heart logo which means that they have a One Planet Action Plan approved by BioRegional and aim to meet stringent One Planet Community 2020 targets. Their action plans and progress towards targets will be reviewed.

We're working with developers elsewhere, including in China, using the ten One Planet Living principles to influence their plans. We want the number of endorsed One Planet Communities to grow, and for them all to learn from and inspire each other.
We work in partnership with municipal authorities, local residents, voluntary organisations and businesses to put in place initiatives and that can be adopted throughout the area to help organisations and individuals to use the 10 principles of one planet living to reduce their environmental footprint.
The London Borough of Sutton, Middlesbrough Council and Brighton & Hove City Council are the first regions to sign up to the programme.

B&Q and One Planet Home
Since 2007, BioRegional and B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement retailer, have partnered to develop solutions to reduce the environmental impact of its stores, products and supply chains. Key successes include a 20 per cent reduction in the company's carbon footprint and the development of a 3,500 strong eco-product range – One Planet Home.
You can find out more about One Planet Home here and on B&Q's website.
We also work with several other UK and global businesses on their sustainability journey, using the ten One Planet Living principles. More...
One Planet Action Plan
We have developed a free toolkit to help small to medium sized organisations to develop their own One Planet Action Plan: to save money, reduce your impacts and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.
You can download the toolkit here.
Our work on One Planet lifestyles aims to provide people everywhere with information, inspiration, tools and products that help them to achieve one planet living.
Although much of the public facing work is provided through our partner projects, such as One Planet Sutton and the B&Q One Planet Home product range, BioRegional also works directly with the public through our online One Planet Living calculator and action plan tool, and through our BedZED Tours programme.
We're also seeking big gains in the sustainability of major events, including big sports events, leveraging their ability to attract and inspire huge numbers of people to spread awarness of One Planet living and construction. The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games used the One Planet Living aproach, helping London to be chosen as the host city and its 2012 Games to be the most sustainable ones of the modern era.
