One Planet Living case studies
Overview
BioRegional's global One Planet Living initiative consists of a range of practical projects and partnerships that demonstrate how we can live within our fair share of the earth’s resources. Click on the tabs above to find out more about the main themes of the initiative:
- Communities
- Regions
- Organisations
- Lifestyles including the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
The One Planet initiative uses the 10 principles of one planet living as a framework to help us live and work within our fair share of the earth’s resources.
Communities
BioRegional's One Planet Communities programme is a network of earth’s greenest neighbourhoods, where people can live a healthier, high-quality lifestyle within a fair share of our planet's resources.
Working with developers around the world, the programme currently has award-winning endorsed projects in the USA, UK, and Portugal, with others planned in South Africa, China, Australia, and Canada. Use the tabs above to find out about these projects and the leading developers that are behind them.
Officially-endorsed projects display the planet with a heart logo which means that they have a One Planet Action Plan approved by BioRegional, aim to meet stringent One Planet Community 2020 targets and will be independently monitored until 2020.
The currently endorsed communities are:
Sonoma Mountain Village, USA - visit scheme website
One Brighton, UK - visit scheme website
Mata de Sesimbra, Portugal
One Gallions, UK - visit scheme website

Regions
BioRegional's One Planet regions programme is for cities, counties, districts and boroughs that have committed to adopt the One Planet Living framework.
We work in partnership with municipal authorities, local residents, voluntary organisations and businesses to put in place initiatives and that can be adopted throughout the area to help organisations and individuals to use the 10 principles of one planet living to reduce their environmental footprint.

The London Borough of Sutton and Middlesbrough are the first regions to sign up to the programme.

Organisations

BioRegional's One Planet organisations programme helps companies, not-for-profit organisations, and community groups to reduce their impact on the environment, using the One Planet Living framework.
B&Q and One Planet Home
Since 2007, BioRegional and B&Q, the UK’s largest home improvement retailer, have partnered to develop solutions to reduce the environmental impact of its stores, products and supply chains. Key successes include a 20 per cent reduction in the company's carbon footprint and the development of a 3,500 strong eco-product range – One Planet Home.
You can find out more about One Planet Home here and on B&Q's website.
One Planet Action Plan
We have developed a free toolkit to help small to medium sized organisations to develop their own One Planet Action Plan: to save money, reduce your impacts and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.
You can download the toolkit here.
Lifestyles
Our One Planet lifestyles programme aims to provide the general public with information, inspiration, tools and products that help them to achieve one planet living.
Although much of the public facing work is provided through our partner projects, such as One Planet Sutton and the B&Q One Planet Home range, BioRegional also works directly with the public through our online One Planet Living calculator and action plan tool, and through our Visitor Centre and BedZED Tours programme.
The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics also used the one planet living approach at the bid stage and we continue to work with the delivery and legacy team to see the strategy put into action.
One Planet Living
One Planet Living is a positive vision of a world in which we live happy, healthy lives, within the natural limits of the planet.
