Benefits of joining the scheme

Benefits to business

Local Paper for Surrey is a great idea for organisations of all shapes and sizes!

• if you take part in all three steps your organisation can save money!
This is through reducing paper consumption, negotiating better contracts from your paper supplier and also reducing trade waste charges by diverting significant volumes of paper waste for recycling. For example, Direct Line insurance saved 20% on their paper budget when joining Local Paper for London scheme.

• improve your organisation’s environmental performance.

•improve staff morale, as employees are keen to see their organisations actively seeking to reduce their environmental impact.

•recycling is a labour intensive activity, so taking part in the LP4S scheme helps provide jobs and boost the local economy.

Benefits to the environment

Taking part in the Local Paper for Surrey scheme leads to significant benefits for the environment.

•The ecological footprint of local paper is just 14% of imported virgin paper.

•reduction in the amount of waste requiring landfill and incineration.

•protect biodiversity by reducing our reliance on the world's forests for timber used to make paper.

•reduction in the amount of fossil fuels used for the transportation of wood pulp and paper. (The waste paper used to produce Evolve has only travelled 73 miles on average, as opposed to the wood and pulp for an equivalent paper, which as travelled 1400 miles.)

•most of the wood consumed in Indonesian pulp mills is still derived from clear cutting ancient rainforest - some of which still makes its way to the UK markets. (WWF 2000)

•Evolve paper is made without using environmentally harmful chemicals used in some other production methods.
