The Local Lavender project

Since 1996 BioRegional have worked with HMP Downview, Sutton Council and Yardley to revive south London’s historic lavender fields. In 2004 the project was handed over to a local community group Carshalton Lavender.

The three acres of lavender at Stanley Park Allotments have matured and hundreds of people, mostly locals, turn up every year to “pick their own” at the annual community harvesting event.

The flowerheads left after the picking are harvested and used to produce essential oil. Bottles of lavender essential oil can be purchased from our web shop and also through local outlets.

In 2003 we began a new project to plant a larger 25-acre lavender field at nearby Oaks Farm. The site is now run commercially by Mayfield Lavender, who also produce lavender essential oil.
