& Urban Forestry
Forestry in Britain faces problems
of low timber prices and difficulties in paying for management of
woodlands from timber sales. High quality sawlogs are much easier
to sell than smaller logs and wood for pulping. In urban areas tree
surgeons and landscape contractors produce significant amounts of
poor quality logs and other tree waste from trees in parks, gardens
and streets. Disposal of this is increasingly costly.
BioRegional’s forestry programme
looks at woodlands and trees in a local context. It recognises them
as assets which are potential resources. We aim to bring woodlands
into management for the benefit of people who use them for recreation;
for the plants, butterflies and animals that live in them; and for
people who work in them or make use of woodland products. We support
certification
which gives an independent verification of good woodland management.
Looking after woodland, even purely
for conservation, produces timber. BioRegional is developing new
products and markets for this timber and the material produced by
tree surgeons in cities and towns. What some regard as waste can
and is being turned into useful valuable products such as wood
chip for fuel. TreeStations
provide a central point where this can be done.
