Canada & USA

US and Canadian projects are joining our exclusive international network of Zero Carbon/Zero Waste neighborhoods offering truly sustainable, healthier lifestyles.

One Planet Communities, a non-profit initiative of sustainability experts BioRegional and global partners, helps forward-thinking municipalities and real estate developers build neighbourhoods that reduce the ecological footprint of residents to a truly sustainable, "one planet" level.

The One Planet Community independent endorsement is a sign of the highest achievement in sustainable design & operation.

Building on lessons from BioRegional's award-winning BedZED urban eco-neighborhood in London, UK, One Planet Living's next-generation design process integrates community-driven socio-economic development, healthy eco-conscious lifestyles, green building standards, bioregionalism, local food production, biodiversity regeneration, and eco-footprint analysis within the broad 10 Principles of One Planet Communities - setting the most ambitious targets for green communities yet seen in North America.

Our Sustainability Action Plan consulting process has been used around the world to tailor sustainability strategies for diverse clients (for example, the London 2012 Olympic Games).

Our innovative One Planet Lifestyles program is being used by green residential developers to increase quality of life among residents while creating incentives to help them lower their ecological impacts to a One Planet level, providing infrastructure and social programs that make sustainable behaviours easy, affordable, and practical.

VANCOUVER: OPL joins Vancouver Mayor Sullivan in launch of EcoDensity Initiative

June 16, 2006, by Greg Searle.
Mayor Sam Sullivan invited us to speak at the launch of his laudable new Vancouver EcoDensity Initiative as a kick-off to the Third World Urban Forum.

It was a great honor to share the podium with Patrick Condon, UBC James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable Environments and Michael Geller, a developer currently overseeing the creation of Simon Fraser University's new green residential neighbourhood. The BBC - on hand for the World Urban Forum - ended up quoting one of my remarks. Rodney and I wrote a short paper on ecological footprint impacts of densification, using the framework of the ten principles of One Planet Living.

Official quote: "EcoDensity promises to be one of the most important strategies to reducing the ecological footprint of Vancouver residents, and it will enhance their quality of life, too."
