BedZED Visitor Centre

Overview

The BedZED Visitor Centre houses the BioRegional exhibition, One Planet Experience and BedZED show home, along with meeting and seminar facilities and the offices of BioRegional Development Group.

BioRegional products, including: locally sourced charcoal, UK-made recycled office paper, hemp note paper, lavender oil and research reports are available for sale at Centre reception.

Opening hours are from 9.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, except bank holidays.

Entrance to the BedZED Visitor Centre is FREE.

BedZED is a real community where people live. It is essential that visitors respect the privacy of residents.

To maintain their privacy please DO NOT:

• visit on weekends
• wander around the site unless you are on a guided tour
• take photographs of residents' homes - instead download our gallery for free
• approach residents with questionnaires.

Exhibition

BioRegional exhibition, One Planet Experience and the BedZED resources room

The visitor centre houses exhibition material on ecological footprinting, One Planet Living, and our partnership projects such as the international One Planet Communities network, incuding a scale model of One Brighton - the largest mainstream sustainable community in the UK.

In the BedZED resources room you can watch videos about BedZED and leaf through our research reports. Most of our reports can also be downloaded for free from our website or can be purchased as hard copies from our shop.

In October 2011, we opened a new interactive exhibition to tell the London 2012 sustainability story and to inspire community leaders and the wider public to live greener lifestyles - One Planet Experience. The exhibition features: the carbon calculator house where you can select different homes improvements to calculate your carbon and cost savings, the energy velodrome where you pedal to create electricity, a drafty and insulated window comparison and touch screen quizzes, along with personal advice from BioRegional’s sustainability experts and more.

The BedZED show home

Most visitors want to see what it is like inside a BedZED home, and the BedZED show home enables you to do just that. Spread over two floors, you get the chance to see a fully-furnished kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom.

All materials have been chosen for their environmental sensitivity such as kitchen cupboards made from recycled vending machine coffee cups, natural flooring, reclaimed furniture and low-toxicity eco paints.

Respecting the privacy of residents
BedZED is a real estate where people live. It is essential that visitors respect the privacy of residents. We therefore request that visitors do not walk around the site unless doing so as part of a guided tour.

No photography
Please do not take photos or videos outside. We can provide professional digital photos free of charge from our on-line library.

Entrance to the visitor centre is free.

BedZED guided tours
For those who would like a more in depth introduction to BedZED, we offer guided tours, led by a member of staff from the BioRegional  team – BedZED co-developers and sustainability consultants. Find out more.

Large groups (5 people or more)
If your group would like to visit the exhibition and show home without coming on a tour, please contact us first to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Travelling to BedZED
BedZED enjoys good public transport links. We strongly encourage visitors to arrive by sustainable transport (foot/ bike or public transport). Car parking spaces are strictly limited and must be booked in advance. More details.

• Accessibility
  The Centre is fully accessible with disabled access toilets. The ground floor of the show home is wheelchair accessible and there are videos of teh upper floor.

• BedZED seminar facility for hire
  BedZED is an inspirational location for a meeting or seminar.  BioRegional has 2 meeting rooms that can be booked. BedZED is easily accessible by train from Central London either from Victoria (20 minutes) or Kings Cross (45 minutes) stations to Hackbridge station.
