The big challenge

Situated in the heart of central London, The Portman Estate comprises 110 acres of prime commercial, retail and residential space.

As steward of a historic London estate and landlord to thousands of residents and hundreds of businesses, shops and restaurants, it has a significant impact on - and responsibility to - its community and the environment.

We're delighted to have supported the Estate since 2020, covering both corporate sustainability and built environment support.

Our people-shaped support

We don’t consult from afar, we plug into your team – and this is exactly what we’ve been doing alongside The Portman Estate for the last five years.

Building on our previous work to measure the Estate’s carbon footprint, we recently collaborated with its sustainability committee to develop a robust set of science-based decarbonisation targets that will ensure it reduces its emissions in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement.

We’ve been working side-by-side with the Estate to turn supplier engagement into something far more powerful than just a tick-box exercise. This year, we embedded robust environmental data collection through its Supplier Charter and delivered tailored carbon footprinting training to its highest-emitting suppliers - building the confidence and capability needed to take real action. By working collaboratively across the supply chain, we’re helping unlock progress on scope 3 emissions - the most complex, but ultimately the most transformative, part of the journey.

Beyond carbon, we’ve been bringing the right people together to spark practical change. Our supplier roundtable created space to share ideas, challenge assumptions and explore new approaches to the reuse of building materials across refurbishment and fit-out projects. Now, we’re supporting a dedicated internal working group to turn that momentum into action - helping the Estate harness circularity to reduce waste, capture value and make more of every project.

We’re also pleased to be working with the Estate to enhance nature around its London assets through our role as project managers of Wild West End, an alliance of property owners championing urban nature.

The big impact

Over the past five years, our team has:

  • Positioned The Portman Estate as a recognised sustainability leader among its peers, including achieving SBTi validation in 2025, and setting a net-zero target of 2045
  • Strengthened supply chain resilience and long-term business stability through supplier engagement, training, procurement guides, including launching the Estate's first-ever supplier charter
  • Confirmed the feasibility of the Marble Arch Energy Network – a potentially trailblazing energy network connected to the London Chalk Aquifer that would decarbonise heating and cooling across the district.

And we’re not stopping there

We recently collaborated on a revised strategy and action plan running to 2028, which supports the decarbonisation targets and ensures that sustainability is addressed holistically across the whole Estate.

We were also delighted to support the Estate’s move into its new head office in Marble Arch, creating a One Planet Living action plan to ensure the space’s sustainability credentials matched the Estate’s ambitions. Our lifecycle assessment of the fit-out found that it performed significantly better than industry benchmarks.
