Kingfisher group slashes operational emissions by 66% since 2016, way ahead of target
Our long-term partner Kingfisher group (B&Q, Screwfix, Tradepoint and more) has reduced its operational scope 1 and 2 emissions – the emissions that are owned or controlled by the company itself – by 66% since 2016. This is way ahead of its science-based target of 37.8% by 2025.
According to its annual report for 2024/25, the global retail giant has also reduced absolute scope 3 (indirect) emissions from supply chains and product use by 30.4%, with a scope 3 emissions intensity reduction of 38.7% since the 2017/18 financial year.

Kingfisher has demonstrated that it is possible for companies to make dramatic reductions in their operational carbon emissions in a short time. This is a particularly impressive achievement given that Kingfisher brands don’t typically own their retail premises. Other companies should follow its lead.
Alice Levett, Principal Sustainability Consultant, Bioregional
Key to the company’s achievements so far has been to focus on the electrification of heating. This includes the roll-out of air-source heat pumps across nearly 900 stores.
Kingfisher is also implementing alternative fuels for vehicles, and installing solar PV panels on roofs. The company’s renewable energy investments currently generate 12.5 GWh of renewable electricity per year.

Alongside switching to cleaner sources of energy, increasing energy efficiency has had an impact: Kingfisher has set a lower minimum temperature of 16 degrees for its stores, saving money and energy. It has also made progress in installing energy management systems that monitor, control and optimise energy use across stores.
And Kingfisher’s trailblazing achievements go far beyond decarbonisation. Over half (53%) of group sales and 63% of own exclusive brand sales are now designed for sustainability – either because they are made from environmentally friendly materials, or because they help people to live more sustainably at home. Some 98% of the company’s wood and paper is sustainably sourced.

It's the work we do with Bioregional that adds so much to our Sustainable Home Products programme - having their experts as our "critical friends" keeps it robust, relevant and meaningful. Our first list of products that we worked up with Bioregional's guidance was back in 2008 - and was just a couple of hundred lines!
