The initiative supports cities that enable people to thrive in harmony with nature - both now and in the future. It celebrates the best ideas, people, actions and policies that can accelerate the transformation of cities.

We are passionate about using One Planet Living as a tool for engagement and inspiration, and with your support, we can help the 2022 winners ensure that their climate actions and ambitions are in line with commitments made under the Paris agreement. We have the expertise and experience across sectors to make that happen, from zero waste solutions and carbon-negative buildings, to creating spaces where local economies and health and happiness can flourish.

One Planet Abingdon is a unique grassroots community group in Oxfordshire, aiming to become Abingdon’s go-to place for community connections and climate action.

We are inviting citizens to join in conversations and learn about the challenges and opportunities presented by the climate crisis and how to make the most of a transition to a zero-carbon economy.

With our long-standing experience of working in partnership with Oxfordshire’s communities and businesses - through One Planet Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire Greentech - we want to share learning and speed up climate action across Abingdon, and beyond.

This pioneering project seeks to enable resident-led local climate action, unlock opportunities for green economic recovery, encourage self-sufficiency and support social and mental wellbeing. Over half the world’s population now lives in urban areas. Communities and businesses are looking for real ways to build a more sustainable future for themselves while achieving other benefits - positive social, health, economic, and environmental impacts - that go beyond emission reductions. However, these co-benefits of low-carbon lifestyles are often less reported, and as a result, less understood.

We are looking for support to develop a comprehensive and robust methodology for collecting impact data and carry out a systematic review of the evidence that clearly shows that low-carbon measures can meet a range of human development goals and priorities.

We want to gather the data across all our One Planet Living projects, to quantify the carbon savings, and then identify the co-benefits across spheres such as public health, employment, and inclusivity. With your support, we’d be able to not only capture the compelling evidence but also use our position of influence to spread the word and advocate for change.

Planting trees is well recognised as not only part of the journey to net-zero, but also as an important nature-based solution to improve biodiversity and environmental quality.

But harnessing the power of treescaping, (trees in all their forms), in a way that creates the maximum benefit for both the environment and society is a complex task. To help solve the problem, we are partnering with Oxfordshire Treescapes Project and Grow Green Carbon to demonstrate how innovative mapping methodology can be used to bring optimal social and environmental benefits, especially to communities with limited access to nature, whilst avoiding the pressures of competing land-use.

We have already engaged with local residents and landowners to build a shared understanding of the benefits of nature recovery activities in Oxfordshire. With the right funding for training opportunities, this project can have significant benefits for Oxfordshire’s biodiversity and landscapes, along with improving residents’ health and wellbeing.

We currently offer training to educate decision-makers about what the climate crisis means for them, and how they can live and work within the limits of our planet.

Using our One Planet Living framework, we help people develop their own sustainability action plans and explore the skills and approaches they need in order to tackle the climate and ecological emergencies in their everyday lives.

Our ambition is to reach many more individuals and groups around the world, including offering subsidised places for those who need it most. But we can only do this with your support. We are acutely limited by the availability of trainers and the lack of resources to deliver live, trainer-led sessions. As a charity ourselves, we’d love to be able to offer subsidised places for non-profit organisations and those who are economically disadvantaged.
