One Planet Living is being used by leading real estate developers, local government, manufacturing companies and retailers around the world.

It has given our partners a way to plan, create solutions and communicate simply their intentions to their customers and stakeholders.  It has helped them differentiate themselves from their competitors, create new products and services, increase profitability and reduce costs at the same time as improving their social and environmental performance.

The Environmental Challenge

Globally we’re consuming naturally-renewing resources and polluting the planet at a level forty per cent higher than the earth can sustain. Different countries are consuming at very different rates.  Ecological footprinting shows that if everyone in the world consumed as many natural resources as the average person in western Europe, we’d need three planets to support us. If everyone consumed as much as the average North American, we would need five planets. In China and South Africa the overall average is one planet, but this hides the massive differences in consumption between the rich and poor in these countries.

Green house gas emissions, or which carbon dioxide is the most important, account for around fifty per cent of our global ecological footprint.  In order to avoid catastrophic climate change, annual global greenhouse gas emissions need to peak by 2020 globally and be reduced by at least 50% from 1990 levels by 2050.

One Planet Living takes ecological footprinting and carbon footprinting as headline indicators of environmental sustainability.  We then use a per capita ‘global fair share’ as a target to guide us in finding solutions.  For example for greenhouse gas emissions we assume a per capita sustainable level of 4 tonnes per person per annum by 2020 reducing to 1 tonne per person per annum by 2050.  Similarly for ecological footprint we assume a global per capita target of 1.2 hectares per person per annum by 2020.

Impact of One Planet Living

Our experience, and that of our partners, is that using One Planet Living helps organisations and their stakeholders work together in a common cause and that this gives better outcomes.

It can help save costs.  Our partner, home improvements retailer, B&Q for example, has saved over £66 million since 2007 through energy saving, reducing transport emissions and reducing waste to landfill.  It has also helped them train their staff and create new product offers such as a completely green bedding plant tray.

It can help developers reduce overall construction costs and create an aspirational lifestyle, increasing sales rates and financial returns – for example at the One Brighton and Grow communities.  It can also improve people’s health by making it easier for people to adopt walking and cycling.

With its simple story and easy-to-absorb messages, it can help engage people such as has been done by the municipalities adopting One Planet Living; or the 2,000 athletes who visited our One Planet Centre at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It can help support sustainable tourism as is being done with our partners at Singita Serengeti in Tanzania and Villages Nature in France.
