In 2018, Kingfisher launched its sustainable growth plan. Bioregional led the development of a new set of targets that respond to customer insights research as well as tackle key sustainability issues
Setting science-based targets
Bioregional has more than 10 years’ experience of working with a range of businesses including major retailers like B&Q and Kingfisher plc to turn general sustainability objectives into concrete, realistic and science-based sustainability targets.
Our services include:
Sector review and benchmarking
We start by identifying:
- Key sustainability issues to address based on your company’s size and sector
- The level of ambition being set by competitors and sector initiatives
- Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals that could be adopted as part of a set of business targets
- Relevant outcomes and KPIs based on Bioregional’s own One Planet Living Goals and Guidance
Through this review, and by looking at your current sustainability performance and business priorities, we will propose a long list of topics and KPIs to consider. We will then work with you to engage stakeholders and build consensus on what to focus on in your suite of sustainability targets.
Setting bespoke targets
If you need a more bespoke approach, Bioregional can create comprehensive models to inform the development of environmental targets.
For example for Kingfisher plc, we calculated the lifetime energy and carbon consumption of all energy-using product ranges. We then modelled how much energy and carbon reduction could be achieved by improving the energy performance standards of its ranges. This provided a strong evidence base on which to set a target and develop a clear roadmap to achieving it.
Setting science-based targets for greenhouse gas reduction
We also have a wealth of experience in setting greenhouse gas reduction targets that meet the criteria of the global Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
We will first review and analyse relevant SBT methodologies, consider business growth projections and carbon reduction scenarios.
Then we will advise which target would be most appropriate considering your sustainability strategy and ambition.
We can also help you get internal buy-in, and gather all the evidence and submission files needed to put a comprehensive submission forward to the SBTi.

They went beyond our initial brief to help set our first science-based targets and provided additional support to calculate aspects of our scope 3 footprint.Elizabeth Edgington, Group Carbon and Sustainability Manager, NG Bailey
